We learned a valuable lesson this week about advertising. Brands freak out when you rip on black people. After former cokehead Don Imus called members of the women’s Rutgers basketball team “nappy-headed hos” and “jigaboos,” advertisers like P&G, American Express, GM, and Staples pulled their ads. First off, what is Don Imus doing commenting on women’s Rutgers basketball anyway? Most people didn’t even know they had a team. Additionally, this is not a freedom of speech issue. The 1st and 14th Amendments are an illusion when mammoth brands are buying advertising. Just yesterday, Don Imus was fired, and Rev. Al Sharpton can continue to make money in the race industry he has created. Keep in mind that Imus and Sharpton are brands in their own right.
